The Philadelphia 76ers and Bryan Colangelo have agreed to part ways and the details surrounding his departure are getting stranger and stranger.

After an investigation into burner Twitter accounts that allege Colangelo ran as many as five different accounts used to criticise former co-workers, current players and discuss 76ers business, the team conducted its investigation that while Colangelo himself may not have known about all of the accounts, findings showed his wife was behind them, which was enough to suggest that the team and Colangelo do not work together. So too, rumors are that pressure from Jerry Colangelo (Bryan’s father) that he would hurt family ties with the team if they fired Bryan was enough and the stink too great with such unethical behaviour all around, to keep the relationship healthy. The organization simply wanted to separate itself from all of it and Bryan’s departure is being described as a “resignation.”

Sixers’ coach Brett Brown will immediately take over for Colangelo and a search for a new GM will begin right away. The franchise is set to hold a press conference later Thursday afternoon to make the announcement.

The 76ers put out a statement on Thursday saying:

“The Philadelphia 76ers organization has accepted the resignation of President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo, effective immediately. We appreciate Bryan’s many contributions during his time leading our basketball operations and thank for him for the work he did in positioning the team for long-term success.

An independent investigation by New York-based law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison LLP was conducted into certain anonymous social media accounts that posted information concerning the club, personnel, and related topics. It has become clear Bryan’s relationship with our team and his ability to lead to 76ers was moving forward has been compromised.

Recognizing the detrimental impact this matter had on the organization, Colangelo offered his resignation.

We find the situation to be disappointing for our entire organization. We are determined to continue the tremendous progress we have made over the last two seasons in our quest to win an NBA championship. As such, we have appointed head coach Brett Brown to oversee basketball operations on an interim basis to lead our efforts in this important off-season. He will work closely with the rest of our talented basketball operations department in preparing for the upcoming NBA draft and thereafter until a new General Manager is found. The search for a new general manager will commence immediately.

It Gets Weirder

TMZ is now reporting that Bryan himself has made a statement on his departure and it is not flattering towards his wife. After a private investigation firm found his wife, Barbara Bottini was the person behind the accounts, Bryan has laid the blame solely at her feet.

“While I am grateful that the independent investigation conducted by the 76ers has confirmed that I had no knowledge of or involvement in the Twitter activity conducted by my wife, I vigorously dispute the allegation that my conduct was in any way reckless.

At no point did I ever purposefully or directly share any sensitive, non-public, club-related information with her.

Her actions were a seriously misguided effort to publicly defend and support me, and while I recognize how inappropriate these actions were, she acted independently and without my knowledge or consent.”

Bryan goes on to say that, “the content she shared was filled with inaccuracies and conjecture which in no way represent my own views or opinions. While this was obviously a mistake, we are a family and we will work through this together. Although I am not directly responsible for the actions, I regret this incident occurred and understand that it has become a distraction for the team. Therefore, the organization and I have mutually agreed to part ways.”

There is bound to be more revealed as this story grows and if the rumors of his dad threatening the team and his wife doing all of this behind his back are true, Colangelo may have been a man in the wrong place at the wrong time but it doesn’t cease to make him look like an idiot who probably deserved this particular fate.

We’ll keep you posted.
