In today’s NHL rumors, we discuss the LA Kings the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, and Philadelphia Flyers. What’s so special about these four teams during a slower news day?
Senators and Kings Coaching Search
Dennis Bernstein is reporting the Los Angeles may have their coaching search down to a few candidates. Among them are Sheldon Keefe (Toronto Marlies head coach), DJ Smith (Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach), and Todd McLellan (former Sharks/Oilers head coach).
Meanwhile, in Ottawa, Joshua Clipperton tweeted that Senators GM Pierre Dorion would like to have a new head coach named by the NHL entry draft. TSN listed a number including Alain Vigneault and Joel Quenneville, Sweden’s Rikard Gronborg and former Edmonton Oilers head coach, Ralph Krueger.
They also said the Senators might have somewhere between 30-40 names on their list. It appears they will focus on younger guys, targeting AHL coaches and NHL assistants with some head coaching experience.
Red Wings Axel Holmstrom Heading to Sweden
A recent report from Swedish news source Kvall Posten makes it like Axel Holmstrom will be leaving the Detroit Red Wings. In fact, he’s leaving the NHL and KHL out of his future plans.
Holmstrom is headed to Sweden where Lulea HF and HV71 appear to be ready to pay the most acquire his rights.
Panarin to the Flyers?
NBC Sports is reporting that Columbus Blue Jackets star Artemi Panarin may be a target of the Philadelphia Flyers this offseason. Using much of their sizeable salary cap space to grab arguably the best scorer on the free agent market, speculation is the team, led by new GM Chuck Fletcher wants to make a splash.
The Flyers may even offer up a second- or third-round draft pick to acquire his negotiating rights in June and pay upwards of $10 million-plus per season to sign him.
